Breast Implants - Where Do They Go and How Does the Surgeon Place Them?

By A Aaronson

Surprisingly, there are many options to consider when having a breast implants. Women come in all shapes and sizes and so do their breasts. Depending on the shape and size of your bust, your surgeon will determine how to approach the augmentation process. Understanding what you have will better prepare you to discuss with your surgeon of what you want.

There are some basic factors that determine what breast implants you can use.The first one to consider is the patient's body type. Looking at the body as a whole, how do the breasts enhance or detract from the body. It is also important to consider how much breast tissue the patient actually has. This can make a determination on where the device is actually placed in the patient.

For instance, the implants can be put under the muscle or just under the mammary gland tissue (which produces milk during pregnancy), but over the pectoral muscle. There are benefits and downsides to both type of insertion.

For instance, placing the implants under the gland but above the muscle allows for easier recovery and better access if there is ever a problem with the device. Also, there is less discomfort because the muscle does not have to recover, which can be more painful than just a superficial incision into the skin or fat.

However, if you are willing to withstand the initial pain and discomfort, having the devices placed under the muscle gives a more natural look to the bust. This is because the muscle actually hides the texture of the device.

The next thing to consider is how the surgeon will insert the device. There are a few different types and they also have pros and cons. The first type of implantation, which is a very common method, is performed by cutting the dark skin around the nipple (called the areola). The surgeon inserts the devices through this cut and maneuvers it into place. The way this method is done protects the structure of the nipple so it can continue to produce milk if the client later becomes pregnant, which can be a concern for some women.

Other advantages to this method is the way the scar heals. It is almost invisible. There are few downsides to this type of procedure, the main complaint being if the scar does not heal well. In that case, the scar tends to be more noticeable and can lead to poor image for some women, but this result is unusual.

A surgeon can also implant a device by making an incision under the breast. One fear of this type of method is the scarring. However, many surgeons are well trained in being able to place the scar in the breast fold, so it is not noticeable. An advantage of this method is giving your surgeon more of an area to work with and it is easier to get to if follow surgeries are ever needed. The big disadvantage is the scarring, especially in women who have little breast tissue, but this can be avoided by a skillful surgeon.

A third type of incision is through the navel. The surgeon actually goes through the belly button and is moved into place once inside. As can be imagined, scarring is virtual unnoticeable. Another benefit is a fast recover from the surgery because it does not damage as much tissue. One big disadvantage is the difficult the surgeon will have in making the breasts symmetric and proportional.

These are just a few of the things to consider when thinking about breast implants. However, the best source to discuss these options for you is your plastic surgeon. Coming to your consultation with this information, though, will help you understand the process better.
